I’d go for blue. Symbolizes water, often seen as a renewing, healing, and cleansing element~

I considered that. And I like it as well!

I learned about Yoruba color theory in this African art history class that I took. The prof is Nigerian and he went and worked with these traditional women painters in Akire and they paint with pigment from soil, he calls it the terrochroma technique. The women told him that black is where all the colors come from because when you burn different metals you can see different colored sparks, sorta like firework. In the end you end up with black. In western color theory white is where all colors come from, but the women painters of Akire don’t subscribe to that. Every time when they start painting, they prime the surface with black as opposed to the western tradition of priming the canvas with white gesso.

Kinda off topic but I think it’s worth mentioning

This is really interesting about Yoruba colour theory. Really awesome stuff from women painters in Akure. I’ve known that red is a good colour too. White is for people who can’t afford any other colours.

Sorry I read back what I wrote and it sounds terrible bc I have been up all night trying to write this essay! but ok my professor’s name is Moyosore Okediji, he’s well known in the African diaspora artists circle. It’s been really awesome this semester taking two of his classes. (altho he’s kinda famous he’s not stuck up or has an attitude like some other art profs at my school… not gonna name no names… Prof. Okediji is an extremely humble person I really admire him)

Anyway he traveled back to Yorubaland multiple times in hopes of bringing traditional Yoruba women’s art into our school’s (UTexas @ Austin) very own Blanton Museum of Art, but the people in charge said that ceramics is not high art and they didn’t want traditional ceramic pieces made by Nigerian women in the museum. Professor Okediji later remembered when he was in art school in Nigeria, his grandmother once told him about the Akure women painters. They are a group of women who see themselves as healers. They paint in a closed space in the temple where men are not allowed. They do this at the beginning of every year to cleanse the world. The paintings are also seen as clothes for the orishas (Yoruba divinities), so they are making tributes basically. You can read more about that in this pdf file. So he basically went and worked with these women artists and brought their works into the contemporary art scene.

There’s also a lot of other amazing stuff, Moyo has this website where he has these pdf files explaining a lot of things about Yoruba traditions and art, so if you are interested, go take a look.

they use awful methods to raise funds and rely on shit stereotypes and villainizing autism to cause fear in people which is obviously the LAST thing we need

they dont put their funds to very good use

they want to cure autism altogether which basically means erasing people

instead of worrying about how to actually Help Autistic People in their daily lives

one time they made a video in which a mother talks about how she contemplated commiting a murder-suicide by driving off a bridge with her autistic daughter IN FRONT OF SAID AUTISTIC DAUGHTER and says the only thing that stopped her was her non-autistic daughter waiting for her at home

they are responsible for the “I Am Autism” video in which an eerie disembodied voices talks over clips of children playing and says things such as

“I am autism. I have no interest in right or wrong. I derive great pleasure out of your loneliness. I will fight to take away your hope.”

“Your money will fall into my hands and I will bankrupt you for my own self gain.”

“And if you are happily married, I will make sure that your marriage fails.”

Artist appreciation: Yasunari Ikenaga. He paints on fabric. His subtlety reminds me a lot of Takato Yamamoto, and again the realism is retained through implicated lines, minimal gradations and chiaroscuro instead of harsh contrast. I’m not going to lie, I picked this picture because it kind of looked like me, and I just have to point out how freakish the resemblance was. I’m a prima donna, I know. This is a piece I did for the Native show at Emily Carr.

The names written on my body are actual names for “sexy indian” costumes that can be bought online.

This piece is a visual response to when Halloween comes around again, and people feel it right to dress up as my culture in horrible old stereotypes and pass it as honouring our culture. But it doesn’t. It only adds to more to poorly represented image of Native Americans, and objectifies Native women.

I am a real Native Women and this my body and my culture. And I have a voice

“The performance consisted of the artist being present on a wooden chair, in MOMA’s atrium, in a long-sleeved gown with a pooling train, for seven hours a day, six days a week, from the opening on March 15th, until the closing on May 31st—a historic ordeal. Throughout the performance, she was perfectly silent and virtually immobile (her features registered vicissitudes of emotion, and on the first night, when Ulay took a brief turn in the facing chair, she stretched out her hands to him.) Thereafter, members of the public were invited to sit opposite her—at first, on the other side of a table, and then, when the table was removed, with nothing but space between them. Many of the sitters whom Akers chose to include in the film (including the actor James Franco, who went unrecognized) seem to be having a transcendent experience. Their eyes grow bright; tears well and fall; they bow their heads or touch their hearts—and Abramovic occasionally touches hers.”

there’s something about this performance art piece that really speaks to me. besides the moment when her old lover/partner ulay comes which is an obviously emotional moment… it’s also pretty amazing to think about how the other participants also had such moving experiences. thinking about it, if i had to take a guess why it caused so many to cry… something about a perfect stranger looking at you and being focused only on you for one minute - the whole transaction is really asking and getting someone else to acknowledge your humanity, with no jokes or banter to divert or distract. i think that would be pretty overwhelming for me too.
